Has it only been a month since the last Tidings? It seems like a year. Actually the Dec. issue was last year. There is a lot of new news to share; so let’s get going… What people are saying:We love to get messages from our supporters and we have had some wonderful responses to the December newsletter and Friends activities. Here are a few: Conservation concerns:1. Trouble in the Marsh; PCB contamination at the radio shack
Sometime this fall vandals struck the old communications building in the middle of Petaluma Marsh. Looking for scrap copper they knocked down a cyclone fence housing old transformers and opened some up on the site. Such transformers traditionally used PCB laden oil as a coolant. Ray Thompson of Petaluma Paddlers alerted me to this situation and I contacted the Dept of Fish and Game who own the property. DFG investigated and confirmed that there is PCB contamination, but at a lower level than they had feared. They are currently seeking a toxics contractor to cleanup the site. 2. Trouble at the landfill: slumping levees cause emergency repairs
More trouble at the Redwood Landfill. Seems their Levee recently subsided at the area of the leachate pond, near the fill tower, due to berm repairs. According to Jessica Jones, their new District Mgr., this event happened Mon 12/18. I noticed the activity and took these pictures Fri 12/22. They are now driving in sheet piling to stabilize and repair the levee. "You know how unpredictable Bay Mud is" she said in a phone conversation this morning. Mrs. Jones and I met previously at a joint presentation for John Shribbs Environmental Science class. According to her no waste escaped into San Antonio Creek during this event. This incident should be a warning of what could happen if the dump expands. 3. Spartina trouble on the river:The Petaluma Argus Courier reports that Investigators with the Spartina Project have confirmed the samples they took on their initial investigation are indeed the invasive Spartina hybrid. Read the story by reporter Corey Young.
The Spartina Project has contacted “Friends” to help with further investigations. A Day long boat trip with key biologists and agency people is planned for Feb 2nd. Ingrid Hogle of the Spartina Project writes: “Thanks to everyone for coordinating schedules for a day-long Petaluma boat trip hosted by Friends of the Petaluma River. I am attaching a map of the areas where we have identified non-native Spartina along the river. Our intention is to do a reconnaissance-level survey to get a good idea of the extent of: (1) potential habitat for invasive Spartina. This survey will give us an idea of the extent of the area which needs to be surveyed later in the year, and the extent of the area which could potentially be included in a site-specific control plan. (2) potential habitat for endangered California clapper rails. All of our monitoring and control efforts must be tailored to accommodate any breeding populations of California clapper rails, as specified in our program's Biological Opinion. I look forward to seeing you all on Friday, February 2. We will be meeting at either Port Sonoma or Petaluma, and making a 1-way trip to the other, and shuttling back to our starting location at the end of the day. Details on meeting time & location to follow. OK, enough bad news. Time now for some good news… SF Bay Flyway Festival:The annual Flyway Festival is returning to Mare Is. in Vallejo Feb 2-4th. Successful year end appeal:Friends had a wonderful response to our year end appeal, receiving some very sizable donations and many smaller ones; in all they totaled nearly $4000. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed!

The Petaluma Marsh receives a gift:The Petaluma Marsh has just been expanded by 102 acres thanks to the efforts of Marin Audubon, its president Barbara Salzman, and support from the Coastal Conservancy and USFWS among others. On Friday Dec. 8th, a levee holding back San Antonio Creek was breeched and tidewater poured in to reclaim a section of formerly dyked land on the Marin/Sonoma Co. line. Read about it in the Marin IJ
Friends Board sets priorities for 2007, and beyond: Friends Board of Directors and key advisors met for a retreat on Dec 16th to assess our progress and set priorities for the future. In a wonderful 4 hour session at the Sheraton Sonoma Co.-Petaluma, ably facilitated by Sonoma State Univ. 2nd year Masters Candidates, Dave Tracy and Alan Yee; we discussed our goals, strengths and needs. It was generally agreed that because of Friends growth, the wonderful support of our membership, the commitment of new key volunteers, and continued excellent press coverage; that we have achieved the “critical mass” necessary to be effective leaders within the region on matters relating to the River. In order to realize this potential the retreat attendees indicated strong support for:
It was also determined we need to improve our organization’s structure and capacity so that we can better meet these growing expectations. A team of key volunteers; Marshall Fitzgerald, Robert Brown, and Patrick Campbell have agreed to combine their considerable talents to formulate an organizational expansion plan and present it to the Board within the next 30 days. We anticipate a great future for Friends; with plans to provide more opportunities for education, recreation, and watershed stewardship.
Petaluma Paddlers visit the Marsh:Winter is no time to hang up your paddle. The kayak group Petaluma Paddlers is proving that, by being active year round navigators of the Petaluma’s waters. They have regular recreational paddles on the Petaluma River Wednesday and Saturday mornings, as well as destination trips to other waters in the region on a regular basis. On Sat. Dec. 2nd a merry group of a dozen showed up for lunch at “Marsh Mellow” on San Antonio Creek. They dined elegantly and departed in beautiful weather on a 6’6’’ high tide.
For information about joining the Petaluma Paddlers contact: Or meet them online at:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Petaluma_Paddlers/ Best Wishes to you for the Holiday Season and throughout the year from Friends of the Petaluma River. Greetings all; Here’s hoping each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We at Friends certainly did; in fact we have been so busy working and celebrating that the November issue of the Tidings is just now posting. “Celebration”In this season of gratitude we are extremely thankful for the wonderful support and encouragement Friends has received in our first year. It was with great pleasure that we shared the accomplishments of the past year and thanked those who contributed to our successes at the “Celebration” on October 20th. A special list of first year milestones and memories was created for the event. A copy will be available on our website - www.FriendsofthePetalumaRiver.org.Also online is the Petaluma Argus Courier article, published on Oct. 25th , about our “Challenge Grant” success, is also posted there. Find it on the “Friends in the Press” page or at www.ArgusCourier.com. Future Plans:Friends is looking forward to a bright and busy future. We are poised for another big year with several projects underway and others being planned.A few of our projected activities for 2007:To assess Friends capabilities and prioritize its strategies the Board of Directors will be meeting for a facilitated retreat in December. I look forward to sharing the results and hope we can expand our activities to provide even more community resources and involvement. Recent Tours:Getting people out on the water is still the most effective way we know to share information, generate enthusiasm, and win friends for the River. We provided personal tours for Sonoma Co. Supervisor Mike Kerns and SCCA auction winner Sheri Cardo. Both outings were enthusiastically received and provided promises of future support for River stewardship and Friend’s projects.
Many other folks took advantage of the wonderful fall tours offered by Dolphin Charters aboard the 50’ Dolphinus. Those tours also supported Friends with a portion of the proceeds. Thank you all.
Environmental Challenges:Constant vigilance and stewardship are necessary to protect our River. Friends continues to be pro-active in this area. We recently alerted Marin County authorities of possible leaks in a Redwood Landfill levee. They responded with an investigation and report that the drainage was from a depression outside the landfill boundaries. The area in question was the site of a past failure, which created the necessity of a separate berm and the placement of rock rip-rap for shoring. Hearings in Marin Co. on the landfill’s operation and possible expansion are now scheduled for January.
Spartina may be invading:Another disturbing environmental development was the suspected appearance of an invasive strain of Spartina (hybrid Spartina alternifolia x S. foliosa) found near Shollenberger Park in Petaluma. The discovery was reported by Fish and Game biologist Gene Cooley. This plant tends to dominate other aquatic vegetation, close off tidal sloughs, and drive out natural flora and fauna. It has been an ongoing concern in the South Bay but hasn’t been seen in the Petaluma Watershed before. Learn more at www.spartina.org.Three years ago I assisted the Spartina Project with a boat tour and survey of the Petaluma Marsh. No invasive plants were found at that time; although the seeds are water-born and have been spreading. On Sunday Friend’s Board member and science teacher Dr. John Shribbs paddled his kayak out to investigate the problem. He produced a map of other possibly affected areas (see below). A team of agency officials, scientists, and environmental leaders will be meeting on Wednesday to evaluate the situation. I will keep you posted on developments.
River Rangers last ride? The Petaluma River Rangers culminated a month long after school program with a boat ride on the river. They had a wonderful time exploring sloughs and viewing wildlife between the Petaluma Marina and Lakeville. This program, organized by Darcy Aston, for McNear School was so successful that we are hoping to repeat it in the future. Big thanks to Clavey River Equipment for the generous loan of “Boat Jackets” for this tour.We hope to see you on the water and in the community
Greetings all; here’s the latest River news from Friends of the Petaluma. Celebrate Friend’s first year Oct. 20th:It was one short year ago, in Oct. 2005, that the first “Tidings” was sent to a small list of citizens interested in the river. In it I announced the end of my tenure as Petaluma Riverkeeper and introduced the idea of forming a new community organization to benefit the Petaluma River. The response was incredible and our growth has been phenomenal, capped by a successful Challenge Grant campaign in August & Sept. that raised over $20,000 for Friends. Now we want to celebrate; sharing our many successes with all of the members and supporters who made them possible.
Autumn on the River:The Nautical Mass events are over for the year but there are still many reasons for getting out on the river; to experience the beauty of fall, to view the abundance of migrating birds, and just to have some good old fun!One group whose river season never seems to end is Petaluma Paddlers. They are one of most active and fun kayak groups in the Bay area. You can find them most Saturday mornings on the Petaluma River; or join them for any number of other great paddling adventures. For information about joining contact Ray Thompson raythom@earthlink.net or meet them online at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Petaluma_Paddlers/
Dolphin Tours are returning to Petaluma:Another fine way to experience the River’s fall beauty; and to learn about its wildlife and history is from superb naturalist Captain Ronn Patterson. The 3 hour tours happen twice daily; Oct. 21 & 22 Nov 4 & 5: 9AM & 1PM. The cost is only $35 and a portion of the proceeds will go to “Friends”. You may remember that last spring most of their tours were sold out so don’t miss the boat this time. Call (510) 527-9622 for details & reservations. Or visit them on the web at www.dolphincharters.com. In the Community:We had a wonderful turn out at the Petaluma Progressive Festival on Sept. 26th. Many folks stopped to visit our colorful display and we signed up over 2 dozen new “Friends”. Big thanks to Jaime Walking Bear for helping with the booth and to all of the wonderful people who offered support and donations. We received over $350 that day; a very encouraging response!
“River Rangers” take to the sloughs:Friends is working with a group of McNear students to share knowledge about the River. This after school program, organized by Darcy Aston, will meet through the month of October to explore the wonders of the watershed. We hope to conclude the series with a trip on the river.
DVD on North Bay wetlands available:A compelling 15 minute DVD featuring the beauty and value of tidal wetlands, using the Petaluma River for most its background, was recently donated to Friends by Novato residents John and Alexandra Dickerman. To borrow a copy contact us at (707) 763-7756 or e-mail dmy@sonic.net.Conservation News:PRMD to help stop illegal grading and fill:Responding to alerts from paddlers and river neighbors, Friends worked with County agencies and Supervisor Mike Kerns office to aid an investigation into fill operations along the Petaluma River. The grading of hillsides and deposit of loose dirt on land owned by the Dry Creek Pomo tribe south of Petaluma poses a hazard of erosion and contamination to the River and was not properly permitted. The project was halted by the County Permit Resources Management Department and cited for four violations:
In other news concerning this property, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat had a story on Friday Oct. 6th citing Petaluma’s concerns of a casino being developed on the site and the ballot measure to oppose it. River Dredging is happening downtown:The City of Petaluma must close the Petaluma River Turning Basin from Oct. 13 - Oct. 24, 2006 for a total of 12 days while the dredging is taking place.Redwood Landfill hearing put on hold:The long anticipated public hearing on Landfill expansion plan, scheduled for Oct. 9th, was postponed again; as Waste Management Inc. struggles to respond to overwhelming concerns of agencies and citizens. The new date is now expected to be in Jan 07. Friend’s director David Yearsley addressed the Ca. Integrated Waste Mgt. Bd. along with members of No Wetlands Landfill Expansion in September to alert them to our concerns about expanding a dump on the shores of a sensitive tidal marsh. To learn more about the issue visit www.noexpansion.org.We hope to see you on the water and in the community Dave Yearsley Friends of the Petaluma River Celebrate & Conserve ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Again River Friends; It’s beginning to feel a lot like Fall; the weather is cooler, school is back in session, and the days are growing noticeably shorter. This is an excellent time to enjoy the peaceful beauty of our River; as the marshes are changing colors and migrant birds are making their autumnal visits. You can learn about some opportunities and read about Friends recent activities below. Last Nautical Mass of 2006 to convene Sept 15th:Due to shortened days and cooler weather we are holding the last scheduled “Mass” on Sept. 15th (a week from Friday). It will again convene at the Petaluma Marina around 5:30 PM for a trip to the Turning Basin. Stay for dinner or plan your own itinerary, but join us on the water for a final fling. A few photos from September’s picnic trip to Papa’s.
Challenge Grant update:As reported previously we have been offered a “Challenge Grant” of $10,000 to help realize our dream of purchasing a floating office & Heritage Center. Every dollar contributed to “Friends” will be matched. I am thrilled to report that the two donors have extended the cutoff date 2 weeks to 11:59 P.M. on Sept. 18, 2006. To date we have received over $6000 in donations and pledges toward reaching our total match. They are providing “seed” money to help our organization grow. We are also participating in sending a Paddle Access Grant proposal to the Coastal Conservancy in conjunction with the Sequoia Paddle Club under the guidance Susan Starbird. It will hopefully build on the wonderful work they began last year to develop more paddle craft amenities in Sonoma Co. Public Displays - meet and greet “Friends”:Petaluma Progressive Festival Sunday, Sept 24th at Walnut ParkThis is the 9th year for this wonder gathering of social progressives and environmentally aware citizens. It will feature a full day of interesting speakers and a wide variety of displays and activities; its fun for the whole family. We will be there with our information and merchandise so come by and say hi. A “Mako” in our midst:Thanks to a generous loan by Baykeeper and the donation of berthing by Port Sonoma, we now have the fulltime use of a 21’ Mako motorboat to help in our efforts to “celebrate and conserve” the river. It is currently being used for educational trips to the Redwood Landfill. Read the story below.
Dump Tours: by Friends & NWLE supporter Duncan Dwelle"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" when you're down wind of the dump!
For the last couple of months I've been taking small groups of Sonoma and Marin residents up the Petaluma River from Port Sonoma for evening tours of San Antonio Creek. Our 1 1/2 hour, 8 mile excursions wind through quiet sloughs lined with green and golden marsh grasses sheltering great blue herons, snowy egrets, and noisy flocks of red-winged blackbirds. Then we round a bend and are suddenly confronted with that towering symbol of modern material success: the dump! You think you've seen it from 101? That's just the tip of the iceberg of garbage. Every passenger on our trips has exclaimed "I had no idea how BIG the dump is!" Nearly a mile long, looking like an airfield astride tidal meadows, the Redwood Landfill, at merely one quarter its eventual height, already dominates the Western rim of the lower Petaluma River estuary. From the boat, at a distance of 20 yards, can you "appreciate" the plight of the remaining wild marsh dwellers who must live with constant noise and artificial light every day. Only from the creek can you comprehend the imminent risk of a “dump slump”; when tons of toxic waste would create massive marsh pollution. Hello Again River Friends; It’s time for an update on River related news and “Friends” activities. Here is the current offering from Friends of the Petaluma River. 4th Nautical Mass to convene Aug 11: (Note: date is 2nd. Fri.)This Nautical Mass will be a downstream picnic cruise on Aug 11th. We plan to ride the ebb tide down to Gilardi’s Lakeville Marina and weather permitting have a picnic in the garden there. If the fog rolls in, dinner at Papa’s Taverna is a warm alternative. Either way folks will probably want to arrange to pull out at the launch ramp in Lakeville. The paddle back will be against the wind and tide. I suggest people meet at the Petaluma Marina launch ramp around 5 PM to launch boats & shuttle cars.
In keeping with the unstructured nature of the event participants are responsible for their own safety and travel arrangements and can set their own itinerary. There is a staggered start from the Petaluma Marina; with paddlers and rowers departing in groups from 5:30 to around the 6PM. Call or e-mail Friends for more info. 707 763-7756 dmy@sonic.net. North to Alaska! We have moved the Nautical Mass up to the 2nd Fri. of Aug. (not Aug. 25th as reported in the newspaper) to accommodate the travel plans of yours truly. I will be going to Alaska for 10 days to help Capt. Ronn Patterson on a wildlife photography tour in the inside passage, aboard the 50’ “Delphinus”; the same boat that helped to launch “Friends” by offering us a fabulous free tour. I hope to enjoy cooler weather, see amazing wildlife, and gain sea time toward obtaining an official Coast Guard license; so Friends can offer more on the water services such as possible eco-tours and a water taxi. The Dream continues:
To be continued… Challenge Grant update:As reported in last month’s Tidings, we have been offered a “Challenge Grant” of $10,000 to help realize our dream. Every dollar contributed to “Friends” before Labor Day will be matched by two generous sponsors. I am delighted to report that to date we have received over $3000 in donations and pledges toward reaching our total match. Now is the time for all supporters of “Friends” and any other River devotees to dig deep in their pockets to help us to realize this Dream. For more information & to make a pledge call - (707) 763-7756. or e-mail - friends@friendsofthePetalumaRiver.org. Thanks to the commission of a generous patron we were able to design and print 2 sizes of maps. These were unveiled at our well attended public meeting on July 20th. 1. Paddle Map 2 sided (on waterproof paper) $25 ($20 members) 2. Wall mount 30” x 36”, suitable for framing. $100 ($80 members) River News:A group of river trail supporters and knowledgeable river advocates met for lunch with State Assembly Democratic nominee Jared Huffman on Mon. July 24th to discuss possibilities on the Petaluma. During our water trip to town, Mr. Huffman was very impressed with the estuary and pledged to investigate the potential for creating a River Parkway in Petaluma. He has agreed to work with Friends Board member and Bay Institute executive director Grant Davis to develop possible strategies. We are very excited about the prospects.
My hope is that they spare the sweet little stretch of riverbank at the end of N. Water St. (behind the batting cages) from this industrial indignity. Its one of the few places left in town where one can enjoy a natural connection with the river. Check it out before it’s gone. Volunteer opportunity:“Friends” will host an information table during the upcoming visit of the scow schooner Alma, during the Petaluma Jazz festival; Aug. 18th 20th. We need folks to help with our display and hand out information on Sat. 8/19 between 10AM and 5PM. There will be an organizational briefing at 521 Walnut St. (Galland St. side) on Sat. Aug 12th at 9AM for participants. Please contact committee chair Bob Brown, at 707 776-0938, to help out. Tell a friend about “Friends”

Other voices are heard as well but the one to watch out for is Waste Managements. Their spokesperson says they are no longer seeking an expansion. Although this sounds like a victory for the forces of nature it also occurs to me that they are playing possum. As Chris Gilkerson, Chairman of No Wetlands landfill Expansion says, ( www.noexpansion.org ) " I think they want 25 million cubic yards plus 9%, still a major expansion if you take the current baseline of 19.1 million cubic yards. But we've made progress. Our 5 point, consistent mantra needs to be :
I will post the public hearing date for the final EIR when it is confirmed. Short strokes :Have you seen the jellyfish? Hello Again River Friends, Happy Summer Solstice to everyone! Today we celebrate the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer. According to experts connecting with nature has proven to be a necessary element for a happy and healthy life. Here are some of the ways we do it with "Friends". Mass :The second "Nautical Mass" launched last Friday for a trip to the turning Basin for "Jazz on the Deck". In keeping with the unstructured nature of the event there was a staggered start from the Petaluma Marina with paddlers and rowers departing in waves around the 6PM launch time.
A few of the participants assembled at the turning basin docks for a photo then split to enjoy music and dinner in town. The trip back on twilight waters was a magical for many of us. The next Nautical Mass is July 21 st .
Mess :The Family "Mess About in Boats" held on Father's Day Sunday was enjoyed by several families and was truly a mess, as low tide inspired the younger participants to "mess about" in the mud during our picnic at Shollenberger Park (attached movie clips on RealPlayer). All of the mud soon washed off and was later replaced by ice cream drippings as many of the participants met afterward at 4 th & Sea in Petaluma for cones and malts. Meetings :Here's a follow up reminder about the Park and Rec. meeting tonight . The Petaluma Park and Recreation Commission meeting this Wed. 6/21 7PM at City Hall (11 English St). on the agenda are several important items; ones that could improve the quality of life along the river for years to come. http://cityofpetaluma.net/cclerk/pdf/rmpc/rmpc-agenda2006jun21.pdf Those of you unable to attend the meeting in person you can watch the live broadcast on Petaluma Community Access channel 28 . We also want to provide more ways for people to get involved in our programs and present volunteer opportunities. These meetings promise to be fun and informative. Stay tuned for future announcements on time and place. Membership : the river wants you for a FriendThere is still time to become a "Charter Member" of Friends . Hello Again River Friends; There is a lot happening on the "Petaloo". As the weather improves and the days get longer we want to provide more opportunities for folks to get out on the River. Here are a few of them : Friday night flotilla :This 3 rd Friday event, loosely based on the S.F. Critical Mass model, is a no host outing in boats (rather than on bicycles) that gets folks on the water and the weekend off to a fun start. The starting point is the Petaluma Marina launch ramp at 6PM. Come early (½ hr. or so) if you want to stage a car or trailer at the destination. All nature powered small craft are welcome. Each individual or group is responsible for their own safety can choose their itinerary, while the overall attitude is cheerful cooperation among participants. This month's Nautical Mass, " Jazz on the Deck", will be on June 16 th and will feature a trip to the turning basin for the Apple Box's weekly summer music event. Stay for dinner at one of the local restaurants if you like, but bring a light if you plan to paddle back to the marina under the ¾ moon. First Nautical Mass a "splashing success" :The first Nautical Mass, took place on May 19 th and was indeed "Big Fun on the Bayou", for those courageous enough to brave the elements. As you may recall we had a late season storm front bring some moisture that evening, but the 8 hearty participants who did make the voyage were rewarded with a spectacular "sun shower" upon arrival at Papa's Taverna, followed by great food and hot Cajun music. By all accounts the evening was a splashing success as the following photos will attest.
Family "Mess About in Boats" :We have had several requests from parents to find ways to get children out on the river in small boats. In response "Friends" is planning to take a cue from the famous book "Wind in the Willows" where the Water Rat states; "There is nothing -absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats". I am proposing the first "Family Mess About" on Sunday, June 18 th , Father's Day . We will meet at the Petaluma Marina at 10 AM for a paddle or row to Shollenberger Park and back. Participants should bring some picnic items to enjoy on the banks of the River. Plan to return to the launch ramp between 1 and 2 PM . I can arrange for some rowboats, canoes, and equipment for folks without watercraft of their own. Let me know if you are interested in participating in the "Mess About". Call 707 763-7756 or e-mail dmy@sonic.net. That's all for now folks. There is more to report but "time, tide, (& work) wait for no man". Hello Again River Friends; This is a new mid-month issue of the Tidings. Since the monthly version was getting longish and hard on some peoples attention span (not to mention my typing finger) I have decided to try a bi-weekly version. New opportunities :Big fun on the Petaluma Bayou! Subject : Wild Catahoulas in Petaluma Cajun music returns to Papa's Taverna in Petaluma , Friday May 19, 2006 . Dance lesson at 7 : 30 and music starts at 8. Come for dinner, stay a little longer. Five miles southeast of Petaluma on Lakeville Highway . This is great news. What could be better than a springtime Cajun stomp on the Petaluma Bayou? The Catahoulas are a fantastic band of local musicians. Print the attached flier, spread the word, and come on down to Papa's on Friday ; better yet, arrive by water! (see below) Friday night flotilla :In the spirit of San Francisco's "critical mass" no host monthly bike rides I propose starting a Petaluma River "nautical mass" event. Participants would launch "nature powered" watercraft for a monthly Friday evening outing. Itineraries might vary but time and place of assembly would usually remain the same. The "no host" element would make each participant responsible for their own welfare and preclude the need for insurance. Folks could join in and leave according to their own desires and schedules. In a test run of this concept a few local rowers and sailors are planning to boat down to Papa's Taverna this Friday for a fun night of dinner and dancing. Adventurous participants with nature powered water craft are encouraged to join us for a "flotilla of fun"! We will be meeting at the Petaluma Marina ( 781 Baywood Dr. ) around 5 : 15 PM to arrange shuttles for taking out at Papa's in Lakeville. Plan to cast off around 6PM for the approximately 3 mile row, sail, or paddle down the river. There will be a moderate incoming tide that evening with high tide due around 9PM . Round trippers can paddle back under a half moon, but be sure to bring a light for safety. News and Events :Big news on the Press front! There was an excellent cover story in the Petaluma section of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat on Friday the 12 th. by Tobias Young. If you didn't get the PD see : http://www.pressdemocrat.com//temp/news/12priver_p1p01_p1_petapetalumap.html . It was a real treat to have copies of this article onboard for the evening's benefit cruise. Sunset/Full Moon River Cruise a "huge success" :People came from all over the North Bay and as far away as Berkeley . The Cruise was successful by all standards, as a full compliment of 34 "Friends" boarded the beautiful Delphinus under ideal weather conditions and enjoyed a delightful trip down the Petaluma River stopping for a tasty dinner at Papa's Taverna in picturesque Lakeville.
The River cast a magical spell under the colorful setting sun as great vistas of wetlands stretched to tree lined hills on both sides of the boat. Many birds made their evening peregrinations for an appreciative audience while the narratives of our naturalist hosts were sometimes textured by personal conversations and happy laughter. We were delighted to make over $1,500 that evening with many people saying they wanted to help "Friends" more in the future. I want to extend my warmest thanks to Captain Ronn Patterson and Barbara Fitzgerald for donating this tour. I also want to thank all of the people who helped to organize the event and those who joined us onboard. Every one of you made this an evening to remember. Look for another story about the "Friends" event and the wonders of the Petaluma in the S.F. Chronicle sports section ( most likely on Thursday the 25 th ) as noted outdoor columnist Paul McHugh was also onboard with pen in hand. Friends of the Petaluma River now officially a non-profit :Thanks to the Environmental Education and Advocacy Council's (EEAC) donation of their dormant 501c3 organization to Friends of the Petaluma River and the pro bono legal work of our Board Chairman Andrew Packard Friends is now officially a 501c3. In a generous decision by the former board of EEAC Friends received a windfall of $4000 in financial assets from that organization, for which we are very grateful. Conservation & Culture :Yes, these two concepts coexist in renowned environmental artists Patricia Johanson 's plans the City of Petaluma 's new water treatment plant & wetlands Park ( www.patriciajohanson.com ). Unfortunately the city says it lacks funding to realize many of Johanson's innovative designs. To learn more about this situation and to support the public access components come to the Petaluma Park and Recreation Commission meeting this Wednesday May 17 th 7PM at City Hall , 11 English St. Petaluma . I will be meeting with a coalition of supporters beforehand to strategize on funding options for the art and access elements. Membership : the river wants you for a FriendWe are definitely gaining momentum as more folks are sending in membership donations. If you have not joined us yet please download the "How can I help ?' form from our website and mail it in today. If you have already joined then tell a friend about "Friends". We also need volunteers. There is still time to become a "Charter Member" of Friends . This privilege is limited to the first 100 people to join. As a charter member you will receive special mention at our upcoming events. Join us at the at the "Great Friends" level ($250) and above you will receive a personal boat tour to learn many "mysteries of the River". Hope to see you on the water and in the community! Hello Again River Friends; Happy May Day to everybody! Spring has finally sprung, the rain has abated, and people are coming out of doors. There is also a lot happening on the "Petaloo"; so let's get to it. News and Events :Sunset / Full Moon River Cruise set for Fri. May 12th
Annual Petaluma River Cleanup Sun. May 7 th 9AM to 2PM : The River Cleanup is a great event that promises a feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment, and esprit de corps to all participants. The River Cleanup Committee , of which I am a member, has put in many of hours of planning and preparation to make this one day event a success. Try it, you'll like it! www.PetalumaRiverCleamup.org . Please print the attached flyer and post it prominently. In the News : "Friends" received some nice press in the Argus Courier last week; Under the heading of " New river group to debut in parade "; the article goes on to say in part: " A new nonprofit group formed to protect the Petaluma River will make its official debut Saturday with a float in the Butter and Egg Days Parade. The group will work in the community and on the water to provide education, conservation and recreational activities focused on the river. By getting folks out on the water and letting them experience the river's many faceted wonders, Friends of the Petaluma River hopes to foster understanding, appreciation and protection of this incredible treasure." In the Community :Nature powered river users seek a Center :A group of active river users met over lunch last week to discuss collaborating on a joint effort to establish a user friendly River Center; a vision that would include amenities for rowers and paddlers; as well as providing space for "Friends" conservation, education, and river heritage components. Greg Sabourin , a "Friends" advisor and founder of the North Bay Rowing Club, Susan Starbird , a competition kayaker and non-profit consultant, Andy Rodgers , a founder of Petaluma River Works and member of the Open Space Dist. advisory committee, and myself felt that we had made a good start and decided to plan a stakeholders breakfast with other nature powered river users in the near future. We feel the time is ripe to find a location for a "River Center" as development of river front property is quickly changing the status many potential sites. | Petaluma River Tidings : what's new on the "Petaloo " March 31, 06 | HOME | TOP |
by David Yearsley
Hello River Friends;
We're back with the next installment of Tidings . I say we because this posting is now the official voice of Friends of the Petaluma River . March has been a productive month for "Friends" and I would like to share a few of the highlights.
"Friends" is now online! Yes, our website has just been launched. Check it out at www.FriendsofthePetalumaRiver.org . This is just the beginning of what I hope will be a great resource for keeping the river community informed about the Petaluma Watershed and our activities. I hope you will bookmark the page and return often to watch it grow. I would like to thank volunteers Reno LaGrande and Dave Hage for getting the site up and running. Next week Dave H. and I will meet with an advanced computer science class at Casa Grande High to recruit help in designing layout and expanding content on the site.
Grassroots Grant : We are delighted to report that Friends of the Petaluma River was just awarded a $2000 grant from the No. Calif. Environmental Grassroots Fund to help in our start-up efforts. We were one of just 13 recipients in the current cycle for this highly competitive award. These funds along with generous donations from our Charter Members have allowed us to purchase stationary and business cards and budget money for our initial activities. In addition to the web-site we plan to produce an informational brochure to help in our community outreach efforts. We are grateful to the Grassroots Fund for this award.
Office space sought : "Friends" is actively looking for space to set up more formal office systems and augment our community visibility. A place near the river with room for 2 desks and a few filing cabinets are the basic requirements. The addition of a conference rm. and a public display capabilities would be ideal. We would need a large part of these amenities to be donated or "sponsored" at this time, at least until our funding expands. As a 501c3 non-profit any contributions would be tax deductible. If you have a possible situation, or know friends that do, please contact me directly at 707 763-7756.
Look for us in April at the following community events.
Sat. April 22 : Tabling at Whole Foods 621 E. Washington in Petaluma as part of their annual Earth Day celebration. We will man (and woman) an informational display and hopefully have copies of our new brochure to hand out. Stop by and say "hi".
Sat. April 29 : Participating in the Butter & Eggs Day festivities. Wave to us in the parade then come down to the docks at the turning basin to visit us on our boat.
We were happy to see the colorful article by Dane Golden the Argus Courier on Mar. 22 nd highlighting some upcoming river tours. He also quoted yours truly in describing the experience; http://www.arguscourier.com/news/news/boat060315.html . Don't miss your chance to catch the boat on April 8 th & 9 th or May 13 th for one of these great trips. See www.dolphincharters.com . or call (510) 527-9622 to get onboard.

Petaluma River Row : We were out on the River Sunday Mar. 26 th participating in the annual Petaluma River row sponsored by the Traditional Small Craft Associations Sacramento Chapter. It was a rare sunny day and "Friends" Elizabeth Howland, Greg Sabourin , and Andy Rodgers joined a fleet of about 12 boats for a great trip from the Petaluma Marina up to the Turning Basin for beverages and then down river to Lakeville Marina for lunch at Papa's Taverna. It was a delightful outing and the beauty of the fleet of handcrafted fleet of wooden boats was a sight to behold. Any of you who are interested in traditional boats or recreational rowing can find great resources at these sites : www.tsca.net/Sacramento , www.northbayrowingclub.org . We promote access!
Petaluma River Walk : On Sat. March 4 th a group of 2 dozen hikers braved the elements and participated in Landpaths " Petaluma River by Foot" tour of Alman Marsh and Shollenberger Park . The walk was lead by knowledgeable docents from the Petaluma Wetlands Alliance www.petalumawetlandspark.org and featured a wonderful walk along "The Trail of Tides" with views of the river, abundant birdlife, and the future water recycling facility/wetlands park south of Shollenberger. This is the site that will feature the environmental artwork of Patricia Johanson www.patriciajohanson.com . See the Mar.3rd Tidings on our website for more information on that exciting project. By the way, we still have a few copies of the book "Art and Survival" available. We followed the walk with a visit to the No. Bay Regional "Barista" competition being held weekend at the Sheraton Sonoma Co. Petaluma. It was great to get warm and sip fresh cappuccino's while watching the regions best baristas exhibit their style. The Sheraton is a wonderful venue for public gatherings and they have a great restaurant there called Tolay. They have been very supportive of "Friends", hosting both the Patricia Johanson presentation and our most recent advisor's meetings.
Conservation News : There is a great workshop on Solid Waste coming April 18th .
How does this affect the Petaluma River you might ask? One of the greatest threats to the Petaluma Estuary is Redwood Landfill on San Antonio Creek. Reduction in solid waste could impact their expansion plans. The event promises be fun, informative, and timely. Hope to see you there.
COUNTING DOWN TO ZERO WASTE : New Ways to Counter the "Throwaway Society"
Tuesday, April 18, 6 : 30-9 pm
Supervisors' Chambers,

| Petaluma River Tidings : what's new on the "Petaloo " March 3, 2006 | HOME | TOP |
by David Yearsley
Hello River Friends;
The Tidings have returned. A lot has happened since October 05, when the original posting announced my departure from Baykeeper. I now hope to keep you informed about River related news on a more regular basis. I am launching a new organization called Friends of the Petaluma River , and am doing it with some wonderful people.
Our motto is "Celebrate and Conserve"; which describes the work we plan to do in the community and on the water.
Friends of the Petaluma River will provide recreational activities, educational materials, and instructive programs that promote access to and understanding of the Petaluma River and its "Wetlands Empire". "Friends" will also monitor conditions in the Petaluma Watershed and act as a "voice for the River and its wildlife" in public affairs.
As a new 501c3 non profit we urgently need your support ! Both financial contributions and volunteer help are needed to get our new organization up and running. To send donations or lend a hand please fill out the attached reply form, e-mail me at friends@friendsofthepetalumariver.org, or call 707 763-7756. Our immediate needs include:
Your support and contributions will help to further our vital work.
More importantly, it will bring increased opportunities to connect you with the River.
The Patricia Johanson presentation on Feb 27 th was quite a success, especially considering the weather and other local events. Well over 100 people attended the reception and or the slide show on Patricia's work held in conjunction with the release of the book Art and Survival. "Friends" co-sponsored this event with the Petaluma Arts Council and it was hosted by the Sheraton Sonoma Co.- Petaluma. We were heartened by the support generated for Patricia's innovative designs to connect people to nature, protect the environment, and provide habitat for wildlife in conjunction with large civic projects. This internationally respected artist's plans for Petaluma's new water recycling facility will be a boon to the River and our community for years to come. Watch for the program to be aired on PCA soon. For more about Pat's work see www.patriciajohanson.com . With donations to "Friends" of $50 or more you will receive a free copy of the book Art and Survival (see below).
Landpaths; the non-profit that hosts outings on Sonoma Co. on Open Space has a new calendar out that features trips and events in the South County this quarter. Some of the more interesting offerings include a "Stories about place" event and a "Petaluma Marsh paddle". To learn more about these and other offerings visit www.landpaths.org , e-mail outings@landpaths.org. or call 707 524-9318.
River Tours: As part of our mission to get people on the river we are working with Dolphin Charters, www.dolphincharters.com , to promote their new service providing river tours on the Petaluma. They in turn are donating a portion of the proceeds to Friends of the Petaluma River. Please download the attached flier to learn more about this wonderful opportunity. These are great folks and they provide wonderful information on the history of the River and its natural resources. This trip should be great for bird watching too. There are only a few dates offered at this time and seating is limited, so make your reservations quickly before they sell out. Tell your friends about this opportunity and consider going as a group.
Redwood Landfill : The public hearing on the Landfill's Expansion EIR has still not been scheduled; due in part to some very serious concerns about seismic safety, water quality threats, wildlife disturbance, and other issues raised in comment letters that still have not been answered. Marin Co. should schedule a hearing within the next few months. For further updates and to learn more about this threat to the Petaluma Marsh and the entire watershed visit the website of No Wetlands Expansion (NWLE) at www.noexpansion.org . I'll leave you with these thoughts from Stuart Moody of Marin.
"The sad truth is that the negative impacts of the Landfill in terms of danger to the surrounding marsh lands and communities may be fully realized only after it closes and its owners are long gone."
In 1969, at the end of a presentation on William Bronson's "How to Kill a Golden State," one of the audience members told a parable: "In the olden days, when men lived in caves, they used to throw their garbage in front of their own cave. Then as humanity evolved, they began to throw their garbage in front of the other guy's cave. That's where we are now."
Dutra: Is planning an asphalt production facility on the river at Haystack Landing, just south of town. There was an EIR scoping meeting on Feb. 27th at the Petaluma Community Center. The written comment period for for items that should be considered in the EIR is open until around March 20th . Information can be obtained from the Sonoma County Permit and Resource Mgt. Dept. 2550 Ventura Ave. Santa Rosa, (707) 565-1900.
Or check online at www.sonoma-county.org .
